Kilbourne has a way with words and everyone undoubtedly walked away with insighttheydid not ha before.
Jean Kilbourne opened her lecture with a very powerful statement
; “Every single person believes that they are personally exempt from the effects of advertising”. How true is that? he went on to explain that although we may not think we are buying into these images the media sells us, we are processing them at a very subconscious level that slowly shapes our ideas of what is “normal”. This was the one of the most important things to take away from this lecture; are the standards we hold for ourselves and those around us our own deciding them for us?
Dr. Kilbourne broke down the images in advertising and unveiled them for the sham they really are. omenare portrayed in the media, which is a lie and we are buying it! We holding ourselves to standards that can reach Dr. Kilbourne’s talk is one that all young girls need to hear. These images are not real. They. Are. Not. Real. Repeat this to yourself over and over until you understand that what you are comparing yourself to is unattainable! They are the product of teams of stylists and very expensive computer programs. The models themselves do not look like their own images.
This lecture was eye opening and extremely important. If you didn’t make it to the lecture Dr. Kilbournes book is available in the bookstore!
Whether you attended the lecture or not, the take away message is this: Stop comparing yourself to the images of women you see in the media. unique and beautiful!
